The purpose of this presentation is to review data from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health and the NCAA relevant to the mental health and well-being of student-athletes. A discussion of emerging themes will focus on exploring the challenges of increasing the collaborative provision of psychological services to our student-athletes. |

Components of an Effective Program to Address Sexual Assault Involving Student-Athletes

This workshop will discuss sexual assault and the three major components of implementing an effective sexual assault prevention program on campus. It will include educational strategies for preventing and addressing sexual assault, as well as successful campus collaboration strategies and bystander intervention techniques and programs specifically for athletes and athletic departments. The session will also discuss campus climate information in terms of gathering and utilizing data. Title IX, and the new campus SaVE Act, as well as other federal requirements and how your campus can assure compliance will also be reviewed. |

Difficult Conversations: A Look At Anxiety, Depression, Suicide and Ways of Engaging and Supporting Your Struggling Athlete

This breakout session is intended to increase participant’s awareness of the unique pressures and circumstances that may place student athletes at risk for anxiety and depression. Discussion will include factors that hinder access to treatment and present practical guidelines and points to consider in managing athletes who may be struggling with these issues. This session will conclude with a brief 10-15 minute question and answer period to give participants an opportunity to address specific concerns. |

Stress Management and the Student-Athlete

This session will overview national data related to student-athletes and stress, as well as the impacts that stress can have on sport performance, academics, physical health, and mental health. Time will be spent covering strategies for managing stress individually, as well as looking at strategies that athletic departments can implement to prevent and reduce student-athlete stress. Session includes a review of what Big Sky institutions are doing with their stress management programming. |

It Takes a Village: Diagnosing and Treating Concussions
|
|

This session will review traumatic brain injury epidemiology and the initial assessment of the concussion and organizing the complexities around the evaluation of the affected athlete and the potential long-term consequences of concussion, and the need to involve psycho-social support services and academic support services in the concussion rehabilitation process. Proactive steps including equipment considerations and rule changes in college sport that are geared towards minimizing the risk of concussion will also be discussed. |

The Mindful Athlete

The session will close out the symposium and will provide a greater understanding of mindfulness and its applications, benefits of mindfulness for student-athletes, and practical applications that university athletic departments could reinforce and implement that support student-athlete development of mindfulness skills. |
