OGDEN, Utah (April 3, 2017) - A highly-coveted past weekend in Big Sky Track & Field didn’t disappoint, and more action is on the way as 11 teams are active with two hosting meets this week.
- All 12 teams competed during a great weekend for the Big Sky, as six new top-10 marks and several highly-ranked national marks were set across multiple high-end meets.
- A Big Sky female broke the 21-foot barrier for the first time, with NAU’s Shanice McPherson breaking the conference record with a leap of 21-2. Montana’s Hana Feilzer broke 200 feet in the hammer for the first time, ranking fifth in Big Sky history with a 205-11 mark. Northern Colorado’s 4x100 relay (45.45, 8th) and Weber State’s Hailey Whetten (33:58.66 10K, 10th) also moved into the record books on the women’s side.
- Southern Utah had two distance runners with phenomenal performances, as Mike Tate ran the No. 4 5K time (13:39.81) all-time and Kasy Knevelbaard ran the No. 9 1,500 time (3:41.76). Both ran at Stanford, Knevelbaard leads the country while Tate sits second in the 5K.
- Knevelbaard and Tate weren’t the only athletes high up in the national picture, as the Big Sky had seven other performances last weekend that currently rank in the top 25 on the NCAA lists. After a prestigious weekend, the Big Sky still has 18 top-25 NCAA marks and 86 times/marks that rank in the top 48 of the west region.
- Eleven teams will compete this weekend, with Eastern Washington at WSU hosting meets. EWU will be joined by Idaho and UM at its 45th Annual Pelluer Invitational. WSU will co-host a meet with nearby Utah, with events taking place Friday in Salt Lake City and Saturday’s action coming to Ogden. Idaho State and Montana State will join the Wildcats at the meet. SUU will head to Pomona, while North Dakota, NAU, Portland State and UNC stay in their home states for meets. Sac State is the lone idle team this week.
- The first round of USTFCCCA regional rankings came out today, with 12 Big Sky squads being ranked. The NAU men (5th mountain), UNC women (6th mountain), Sac State men (11th west) and Sac State women (12th west) lead their respective regions.
