Week three of the Big Sky Conference soccer season saw big wins and winning streaks extended. Montana picked off previously unbeaten Iowa on Sunday morning with a rebounded goal from McKenzie Warren in the 73
rd minute of action. The win gave UM a 3-2-1 record heading in to big non-conference games against Purdue and Creighton this weekend.
Northern Arizona picked up a pair of wins at home against Alabama State and Oakland last weekend. Senior Hayley Wingender earned this week’s Offensive Player of the Week award after scoring three goals in the two games last week.
Southern Utah is riding a two-game win streak thanks to a road win at Dixie State and a 2-1 win over in-state rival Utah Valley on Sunday. SUU and NAU are atop the conference in goals with 10 each while NAU has the slight edge in goals per game with 2.0.
Individually, Idaho State sophomore Maria Sanchez still leads the conference in shots, shots per-game, points, points per-game, goals and goals per-game. The Bengal midfielder scored her fifth goal of the season in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Boise State. Sanchez’s goal came on a penalty kick in the 73
rd minute.
Montana goalkeeper Kailey Norman earned this week’s Defensive Player of the Week nod. She currently sits in seventh in the statistical rankings with 20 saves on the season. She posted a career-best eight saves in Sunday’s shutout win over Iowa. She currently leads the conference with 2.1 shutouts.
Olivia Swenson of North Dakota leads the Big Sky with 44 total saves on the year so far.
