OGDEN, Utah (Nov. 11, 2013) - Northern Colorado’s Derrick Barden has been selected as the first Big Sky Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week of the 2013-14 season.
Barden, a 6-foot-5 senior forward from Detroit, Mich., scored 16 points with a career-high 17 rebounds as Northern Colorado upset Kansas State 60-58 on Friday, Nov. 8.
Barden, who earned First Team All-Big Sky honors last season, made 8-of-16 shots from the field, pulled down three offensive rebounds and 14 defensive rebounds. Barden also had three steals.
The win was the first for Northern Colorado over a Big 12 team, and was the first for a Big Sky team over a Big 12 team since December of 2008. Northern Colorado also snapped Kansas State’s 47-game home non-conference winning streak, and ended the Wildcats’ 19-game winning streak in home openers.
Barden averaged 13.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game as a junior. This is Barden’s second career Player of the Week honor.
