Big Sky Outdoor Championships – Throws Preview
The 2012 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships is under way in Bozeman, Mont., with the combined events. The regular portion of the meet will begin on Friday. Catch the action on Big Sky TV. Sacramento State is the returning champion for both the men and women.
The meet will conclude on Saturday with field events throwing off at 11 a.m. and running events start at 12:30 p.m. Sacramento State is the returning champion for the men and women.
In the shot put, the men’s championship record is 64-3 set in 2006 by Sacramento State alum Dave Nichols, while the women’s championships record was set in 1998 by Cal State Northridge alum Beth Burton with a throw of 54-8 3/4.
Sacramento State’s Zach Coniglio ranks first coming into the championships with a mark of 58-4, while Montana State’s Trevor Gilreath is second with a throw of 57-0 3/4. Coniglio finished seventh at the year’s outdoor championship, while Gilreath was third.
On the women’s side in the shot put, Ify Agwuenu of Sacramento State ranks first with a throw of 50-7 1/4, while Montana State’s Amanda Murphy is second with a throw of 49-5. Murphy finished third at last year’s outdoor championship.
In the hammer, the men’s championship record set in 2007 by David Paul an alum of Eastern Washington with a mark of 226-2, while Idaho State’s alum Maureen Griffin set the record in 2003 with a mark of 208-5.
Northern Arizona’s Pascal Tang, who won the weight throw at this year’s indoor championship, ranks first in the hammer with a mark of 206-8, while Montana State’s David Phillips is second with a mark of 205-1. Phillips is the returning champion in the hammer, while Tang finished third.
On the women’s side, MSU’s Amanda Murphy ranks first in the hammer with a throw of 201-10, while NAU’s Lauren Stuart is second with a throw of 185-9. Murphy is the returning champion in the hammer.
The men’s javelin championship record set in 1988 with a mark of 232-1 by Eastern Washington alum Erik Humble, while the women’s record was set in 1986 by Idaho alum Sherry Schoenborn with a throw of 177-10.
Sean Mackelvie of Portland State ranks first on the men’s side with a throw of 219-5, while Sacramento State’s Jesse Elvrom is second with a mark of 212-5. Mackelvie finished fourth last season in the javelin.
On the women’s side, Emily Tyrrell of MSU ranks first with a throw of 170-2, while Holly Fraser of SAC is second with a mark of 152-4. Fraser finished second last season at the outdoor championships.
Nevada alum Kamy Keshmiri holds the championship record in the discus with a mark of 218-0 set in 1992, while NAU alum Anna Soderberg holds the women’s record with a throw of 197-8 set in 1997.
On the men’s side, Karl Gehrke of NAU leads the way with a throw of 177-6, while Cody Jenkins of Idaho State is second with a mark of 170-9. Zach Coniglio of SAC ranks fifth going into the championship but finished third last season.
Nicole Ennen of Montana leads the way for the women with a mark of 155-1. Ify Agwueneu of SAC is second with a throw of 153-6. Ennen finished second last season at the championships.
