Getting To Know MSU’s Bussey
Montana State’s senior Katie Bussey took the time out of her schedule of basketball and school to talk with the Big Sky Conference. Bussey, from Alamosa, Colo., talked about how she got started playing basketball, how she is six 3-pointers away from tying the Big Sky career record, and her favorite place to eat in Bozeman.
Last night against Idaho State, Bussey scored 41 points, which tied the Big Sky individual single-game record with Shannon Cate (2/23/1991) of Montana and Kelsey Kahle (1/25/2007) of Portland State. The win gave ISU its first conference loss of the season. ISU defeated MSU earlier in the season in Bozeman.
Bussey is also chasing another Big Sky record, the career 3-pointers made. So far she has 232. The record of 238 was set by Chelsea Warburton of Weber State from 2004-07.

Q: How did you get started playing basketball?
A: I started playing basketball when I was five. My older sisters played on my dad’s city league team, so I would always be in the gym watching their games and learning to dribble on the sidelines. I’ve played ever since.
Q: When being recruited, what made you choose Montana State?
A: I chose Montana State because I instantly connected with the coaching staff and players. I also loved Bozeman, because it is a lot like my hometown in Colorado.
Q: What have been some of your favorite memories at Montana State?
A: Playing in the championship game of the Big Sky Conference tourney my sophomore year. Playing basketball in Costa Rica for our team’s international tour (May 2011). Being voted freshman of the year the 2008-09 season. Reaching the 1,000 point milestone as a junior, and breaking MSU’s 3-point field goal record as a junior.
Q: How much have your coaches and teammates helped you?
A: My teammates and coaches have helped me become who I am now. I’ve grown and matured mentally with their help to become the player and person I am. They’ve supported me and given me great confidence throughout my career, and also have been great people and friends off the court.
Q: What are your personal goals for this season?
A: My goal is to break the Big Sky record for career 3-point field goals, and become a First Team All-Big Sky performer.
Q: What are your team goals for this season?
A: I imagine like all other teams, our goal is to win a Big Sky Championship, and play in the NCAA Tournament.
Q: You have been named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week on four occasions. How does it feel to be honored by the conference?
A: It shows tremendous respect, and I have always felt so honored to be chosen among all the other great players in the conference.
Q: You rank fourth in the Big Sky in career 3-pointer field goals made and are six away from tying the record. What would it mean to you to hold that record?
A: It would be extremely special to have such high recognition in the conference record books. It would show that my hard work has truly paid off, and I would owe so much to my teammates and coaches for helping me reach the top.
Q: It’s your senior season, what are your plans after basketball and school?
A: I’ve considered playing basketball at the next level, but if that doesn’t happen I will apply for graduate school for a masters in Exercise Science, and would love to coach after that.
Q: Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you?
A: I love singing (although people may not love to hear me sing). I was born on my mom’s birthday, breakfast is my favorite meal any time of the day, and I am horrible at swimming.
Q: If you could have dinner with three people dead or alive who would it be and why?
A: Geno Auriemma – To explore his great coaching mind. Michael Jackson because he’s my favorite artist of all time, and Ellen Degeneres because I would just love to meet her, and possibly sneak my way into getting tickets for the 12 days of giveaways.
Q: If you couldn’t play basketball what sport would you do?
A: Volleyball
Q: What if your favorite road trip in the Big Sky and why?
