OGDEN, UTAH (Sept. 19, 2011) - The Big Sky Conference has selected its football players of the week for games played on Saturday, Sept. 17. Idaho State quarterback Kevin Yost and Portland State running back Cory McCaffrey are the co-offensive Players of the Week. Montana linebacker John Kanongata’a is the defensive Player of the Week. Portland State’s Myles Wade is the special teams Player of the Week.
Yost, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior from Peoria, Ariz., completed 47-of-68 passes for 508 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in Idaho State’s 50-20 win over Northern Colorado. The 47 completions tied a Big Sky single-game record, and the 508 passing yards were the third-most in school history. Idaho State snapped an 11-game losing streak to Division I teams with the win, and also snapped an eight-game conference losing streak. This is Yost’s first Player of the Week honor.
McCaffrey, a 5-9, 185-pounder from Sisters, Ore., rushed 30 times for 222 yards and scored four touchdowns in Portland State’s 31-29 win over Northern Arizona. McCaffrey scored on runs of 33, 3 and 18 yards in the first half, and added an 8-yard score in the third quarter to give the Vikings a 31-17 lead. The win snapped a seven-game conference losing streak for the Vikings. McCaffrey also caught two passes for seven yards. This is McCaffrey’s first Player of the Week honor.
Kanongata’a, a 5-11, 227-pound sophomore from Bellevue, Wash., tallied a career-high 12 tackles and had a game-clinching interception in Montana’s 17-14 win over Eastern Washington. Kanongata’a saw extensive action because of an injury to starting linebacker Jordan Tripp. Among the 12 stops was a key fourth-quarter sack on a third down that pushed the Eagles out of field-goal range. Kanongata’a hauled in a tipped pass with 25 seconds to play and returned it 9 yards to clinch the victory. This is Kanongata’a’s first player of the week honor.
Myles Wade, a 6-1, 300-pound senior from Portland, Ore., secured Portland State’s 31-29 win over Northern Arizona when he blocked a game-winning field-goal attempt with seven seconds to play. NAU’s Matt Myers attempted the 41-yard try, but Wade deflected the kick, sending it wide left. Wade also had four tackles from his defensive tackle spot. This is Wade’s first Player of the Week honor.
