Northern Arizona opened its football season with a thrashing of Division II Western New Mexico, while Eastern Washington suffered a setback to Nevada of the Western Athletic Conference on the opening night of the college football season.

True freshman Zach Bauman scored four touchdowns and rushed for 167 yards on 22 carries to lead Northern Arizona to a 48-0 victory in front of 7,142 at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff.

NAU senior QB Michael Herrick completed 15-of-25 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

Northern Arizona's defense limited Western New Mexico to 11 first downs, and 164 yards of total offense.

In Reno, Nevada jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, leaving Eastern Washington an uphill battle to fight. EWU closed within 35-24 late in the third quarter, but Nevada closed it out with two touchdowns in the final quarter.

Eastern Washington junior running back Taiwan Jones had a big night, compiling 322 all-purpose yards. Jones took his first touch of the season 82 yards on a pass from Bo Levi Mitchell for a touchdown. Jones carried the ball 12 times for 145 yards, caugth two passes for 91 yards, and returned four kicks for 85 yards. He averaged 17.9 yards per touch.

Bo Levi Mitchell, an SMU transfer making his first start at quarterback, completed 19-of-35 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagle defense couldn't slow Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 306 yards and two scores.
