Week One Roundup
The 2010 Big Sky soccer season opened this week, with seven of the eight programs in action on the pitch. For the weekend the conference went 3-9-1 against many quality opponents.
Northern Colorado traveled north to Laramie, Wyo. for a match with the Cowgirls. Sophomore Danielle Birdsall knocked in two goals, with the first coming in the 32nd minute on a cross from Olivia Deadmond. Birdsall struck again early in the second-half on an assist from Brittany Dunn.
The Bears returned home for the second match to face the Air Force Academy in their home opener. Northern Colorado picked up where it left off from on Friday, scoring two early goals to put the Falcons away. This time the goals were chipped in by juniors Kimmie Feilder and Ariel Cook.
Feilder tallied her goal in the 29th minute when she headed in a cross from Janelle Kramer. In the 36th minute Cook found the back of the net on a penalty kick.
Idaho State open its season in the Midwest against Marquette and Loyola Chicago. The Bengals had a tough time with Marquette losing 5-0. The match was closer than the score would indicate, as Idaho State held the Golden Eagles to one goal in the first-half.
Junior forward Tayor Powell delivered the game-winning goal in ISU’s 2-1 win over Loyola Chicago. Powell’s goal was her first game-winner of her career. The goal gave the Bengals a 2-0 lead, Loyola Chicago would get on the board only seconds later.
Alisha Cairl started the scoring for ISU in the 42 minute on shot from 10 yards out, collecting her first career goal in the process. Laura Perez had the assist on Cairl goals, while Rachel Strawn was the helper on the game-winner.
Montana lost 7-0 to New Mexico in Albuquerque on Friday night. The Lobos jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. The Grizzlies had better results on Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M., as they took New Mexico State to a 1-1 tie. Senior Kaitlyn Heinsohn scored her 11th career goal in the 11th minute. The Aggies would respond notching a goal in the 68th minute. Montana took two shots in the two overtime periods, while New Mexico State tallied six.
Portland State opened against cross-town rival and No. 5 ranked University of Portland on Friday. The Vikings played tough but eventually lost 1-0, after holding the Pilots scoreless for the first 74 minutes. PSU then dropped its home opener 2-1 against Boise State on Sunday.
Sacramento State lost to Causeway Cup foe UC Davis 1-0 on Friday and then lost to San Diego State 2-1 on Sunday. The Hornets scored first in the match against San Diego State, but could not hold off the Aztec’s rally.
Northern Arizona put together a furious rally against Arizona State only to lose 4-3 on Friday night in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Lumberjacks never had a lead but always responded to goals by the Sun Devils. Northern Arizona then traveled to El Paso, Tex. on Sunday, where UTEP won a 1-0 match
Weber State opened the season with a 2-1 loss to in-state rival Utah State. The match was played in Sandy, Utah in Rio Tinto Stadium. Rio Tinto Stadium is the home of MLS Cup Champion Real Salt Lake.
