Johnsons Drafted by Globetrotters
Former Big Sky Conference standouts Anthony Johnson and Shaunte Nance-Johnson became the first husband-wife tandem drafted by a professional sports team on Tuesday, as the former University of Montana basketball players were selected by the Harlem Globetrotters as part of the team’s 2010 draft class.
Anthony Johnson played two seasons at Montana, earning Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year honors in 2008-09. He was All-Conference both seasons. Johnson gained national attention in March when he rallied Montana from a 22-point deficit to defeat Weber State in the Big Sky Championship game. Johnson scored a Big Sky Tournament record 42 points, netting the Grizzlies’ final 21.
Nance-Johnson also played two seasons at Montana. She led the Lady Griz in assists. If she makes the Globetrotters she would become the ninth woman in history to play for the franchise.
The two, both from Tacoma, Wash., married in 2006.
Anthony Johnson worked out last week for the New Jersey Nets, and has a scheduled workout with the Boston Celtics this week.
Two former Big Sky Conference men’s players are currently with the Globetrotters. Former Montana point guard Shane “Scooter” Christensen has been with the team since 2006. Former Idaho State star Slim “Bones” Millien joined the Globetrotters in 2009.
