Sophomore Tiffany Schoning shot a first-round 76 to lead Portland State in the first round of the NCAA West Regional on Thursday.
Stanford, CA - The Portland State women’s golf team is in 18th place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional being played at Stanford Golf Course. Seventh-ranked Arizona and number 13 Virginia are tied for the lead in the 24-team event with seven-over par 291.
The 54-hole Regional continues on Friday with the second round of play. Top-ranked UCLA and number 24 California are tied for third at 292. Portland State shot an opening-round 309.
The Vikings, who started on the back nine, had five birdies as a team in the first five holes. But a challenging Stanford Course eventually had all four players over par.
Sophomore Tiffany Schoning was at two-under par early. She finished with five-over 76 to lead the team. Schoning, from Bend’s Summit High School, is tied for 47th among 122 players.
Junior Kalyn Dodge shot six-over par 77 and is tied for 62nd. Stephanie Johns and Britney Yada each shot 78 and are tied for 75th.
San Jose State’s Madeleine Ziegert leads the individual competition after carding a four-under par 67. Pia Halbig of California shot 68.
TEAM NOTES
Portland State is making its fifth appearance in the NCAA West Regional since 2003. The Vikings have won five Big Sky Conference Championships during that span (2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010). Third-year Head Coach Kathleen Takaishi has won two Big Sky titles... Johns and Yada are the Vikings’ leading scorers this season at just over 76 strokes per round.
NCAA WEST REGIONAL
The NCAA West Regional is being hosted by Stanford University at Stanford Golf Course. Twenty-four teams and three individuals are participating. Nine Top-25 teams are participating including top-ranked UCLA. Portland State qualified for the NCAA West Regional by virtue of its Big Sky Conference Championship.
Stanford Golf Course is a 6,103-yard, par 71 course.
Two other regionals are also being played simultaneously - the Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course in Bloomington, IN and the East Regional at Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, NC. The top eight teams and two individuals from each regional will advance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament, May 19-22, at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, NC.
