Big Sky champion Portland State begins play in the NCAA West Regional golf tournament on Wednesday. The Vikings are one of 24 teams competing at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
Portland State will be in the final groups on Wednesday, teeing off on the 10th hole between 1:25 p.m. and 2:09 p.m. Pacific. Live results will be available at www.golfstat.com and on twitter at www.twitter.com/WestRegionals. Action begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The Vikings are led by freshman Britney Yada and senior Stephanie Johns. Yada tied for third at the Big Sky Championship, while Johns and sophomore Tiffany Schoning tied for sixth. The Vikings will be short-handed, taking only four golfers to Stanford. Junior Kalyn Dodge will round out the lineup.
Portland State is on pace to set the school average-round record. Kathleen Takaishi’s Vikings are averaging 309.7 strokes per round.
The Vikings posted a 54-hole score of 928 at the 2008 West Regional in Sacramento, placing 20th. In 2004, PSU finished 20th with a 943 when the West Regional was at Stanford.
The West Regional is very strong as it features the likes of No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 6 Alabama, and No. 12 Cal.
The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championship May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The top eight teams from the East and Central Regionals also advance to Wilmington.

WHAT’S NEXT: The top eight teams from each region, as well as two individuals will advance to the NCAA Women’s Championship May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
