All-Sport Trophy Standings
OGDEN, Utah (April 30, 2010) – With just the 2010 Big Sky Conference track and field championships and academic reports from second semester remaining, The University of Montana holds the lead in the race for the 2009-10 Sterling Savings Bank Presidents’ Cup.
With 12 sports seasons and first-semester academic reports calculated, Montana his in first, followed by Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona and Montana State. The competition, however, is far from over, as academic reports from all of the winter and spring sports have yet to be reported. This year’s winner will be announced in July.
Weber State is the two-time defending champion. Montana won the Presidents’ Cup in 2006-07.
Montana’s men and women have enjoyed an excellent athletic seasons. The Grizzlies have combined for 125.5 total points, an average of 10.46 points per sport. Montana capture the regular-season football title, tied for third in men’s basketball and tennis, and placed third at the cross country championship. Montana’s women tied for second in basketball, placed third in tennis, and placed third at the indoor track and field championship. The Grizzlies’ fall athletic teams finished with a combined grade point average of 3.192.
Eastern Washington, seeking its first Presidents’ Cup, has amassed 108.5 total athletic points. The Eagles have been boosted by a second-place finish in soccer, a regular-season basketball championship, and a tie for second in volleyball. Eastern Washington’s men tied for second in football. EWU’s fall sports team recorded a GPA of 3.254.
The Sterling Savings Bank Presidents’ Cup is an annual award that recognizes a combination of academic and athletic achievement of student-athletes. Academic criteria includes individual grade point averages, graduation rates, and number of all-conference performers with grade point averages above 3.0.
Athletic points are determined based on team finishes in the regular-season standings for soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball and football. Points are awarded based on finish at the Big Sky Championship in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf.
Sacramento State jumped to the lead in the race for the Women’s All-Sports Trophy with strong performances in the winter and spring. The Hornets won the indoor track and field championship, as well as the tennis title. The golf team placed second, while the women’s basketball team tied for second.
Weber State’s men hold a slim lead over Montana in the battle for the Men’s All-Sports Trophy. The Wildcats are averaging 12.7 points per sport, while UM is averaging 11.9. Weber State won the men’s basketball regular-season title, tied for second in football, and tied for second in tennis.
The All-Sports Trophy winners will be announced following the Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which will be held in Ogden, Utah, May 12-15.
