Sacarmento State’s Harbatsiuk, Northern Arizona’s Suhajda Honored as Players of the Week

OGDEN, UTAH (April 6, 2010) - The Big Sky Conference has selected the tennis Players of the Week for matches played between March 30 and April 6. Sacramento State’s Kiryl Harbatsiuk is the men’s Player of the Week. Northern Arizonas Edit Suhajda is the women’s Player of the Week.
Suhajda helped Northern Arizona to a 2-1 record last week at No. 1 singles and No. 2 and 3 doubles. Suhajda beat Caitlin Bampton from Eastern Washington, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and Anya Dalkin from Portland State at 6-1, 6-0.
The junior from Budapest, Hungary, paired up with teammate Malia Wahinepio at the No. 3 spot to defeat Eastern Washington 8-2 and Portland State in the No. 2 spot at 8-3.
Suhajda’s scores contributed to the 5-2 win over Eastern Washington and the 7-0 win against Portland State. Northern Arizona is 7-0 in conference alongside Sacramento State who it will face this Saturday for the regular-season title. The Lumberjacks’ only loss this week was to Washington State.
Suhajda mirrored her school’s record of 2-1 in singles as well as doubles with her only losses to Washington State.
Harbatsiuk, a Minsk, Belarus native, went 4-0 last week at No. 1 singles, winning all his matches in straight sets. His 4-0 record included a victory over No. 29 Fresno State’s Mirko Zapletal. The win over Zapletal marked Harbatsiuk’s 21st consecutive win in singles matches, breaking the school’s previous record of 20 set in 2008 by teammate Anton Stryhas.
Harbatsiuk is 22-1 in singles matches and 14-0 at the No. 1 position this season. This is Harbatsiuk’s fourth Player of the Week award.
In doubles, Harbatsiuk teamed up with Marko Starcevic to go 3-1 with a victory over Portland’s 49th-ranked doubles team. Harbatsiuk and Starcevic’s only loss was to the 19th-ranked doubles team from Fresno State.
Harbatsiuk helped the Hornets to a 3-1 record last week with wins against Portland State, Saint Mary’s and Portland. The Hornets loss was to No. 29 Fresno State.
