Day 1 at the Indoor Championships

Bozeman, Mont. (February 26, 2010) – The first day of the Big Sky Indoor Championship was full of action. Idaho State’s Cassie Merkley won her third Big Sky title in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,707. Weber State’s Natalie Haws just missed a NCAA Provisional time in the 5k when she finished with a raw time of 17:00.61. It was the fastest time ever ran in the Brickbreeden Field house.

Sacramento State teammates Naima Goodwin and Maira Robinson tied for first-place in the high jump. Both hit heights of 5’ 6”. Both missed in their first jump-off attempt and decided to stop, rather than taking another shot at the height of 5-8. There was also a tie for third-place with Gwen Abbott of Montana and Merkely from Idaho State.

Montana State’s Nick Atwood won the men’s 5,000m with a time of 14:40.33. He was followed by Northern Arizona’s Ahmed Osman and Ben Ashkettle. Osman finished at 14:42.69 and Ashkettle had a time of 14:47.03.

Ronald Brookins brought home the long jump title for Sacramento State with a jump of 24-5.75. Brookins has now won back-to-back Big Sky long jump titles. Idaho State’s Sergio Jones finished in second with a distance of 23-4.75 and Montana State’s Asa Staven finished third. Staven turned in a distance of 23-4.0.

After the first day of action the Sacramento State women lead in the team standings with 57 points. Montana is in second with 35, and Weber State has 31 for third. Montana State leads the men with 54 points, followed by Northern Arizona at 52, and Idaho State at 27 points.
