Montana State's Rob Ash earned his 200th coaching victory on Saturday as his Bobcats won a wild 64-61 Big Sky Conference football game at Sacramento State. Montana, Portland State and Eastern Washington also earned league wins on Saturday, while Northern Arizona beat Southern Utah.
No. 10 Montana State led Sacramento State 37-10 at halftime and was primed to move to 2-0 in league and 4-1 overall. But Sacramento State scored 35 third-quarter points and 51 total points in the second half. MSU needed an 8-yard touchdown pass from Denarius McGhee to Julius Lloyd with 1:17 remaining to tie the game at 61-61. MSU's Jason Cunningham made a 25-yard field goal in overitme, while Sacramento State's Chris Diniz missed from 43 yards.
The game featured more than 1,270 yards of total offense. McGhee threw for a career-high 384 yards and four touchdowns. Lloyd caught eight passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns. C.J. Palmer rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
Sacramento State QB Jeff Fleming threw for 348 yards and five touchdowns. Bryan Hilliard rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns.
No. 16 Eastern Washington played without running back Taiwan Jones, but quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell had a big day in the Eagles' win over the Wildcats. Mitchell threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns. EWU intercepted Weber State's Cameron Higgins three times, including twice at the goalline.
No. 12 Montana rolled to a 30-7 win over Northern Colorado in Greeley. Senior Chase Reynolds rushed for 105 yards and scored on a 53-yard touchdown run. The Grizzly defense held Northern Colorado to 53 rushing yards and recorded six sacks.
Portland State won its conference opener, downing Idaho State at Hillsboro Stadium. Cory McCaffrey rushed for 166 yards and one touchdown and also caught a TD pass for the Vikings. QB Connor Kavanaugh threw for 216 yards and rushed for 125. He threw two TD passes and ran for another. The Vikings' defense limited ISU to 3 rushing yards and recorded four sacks.
Northern Arizona moved to 3-1 with a road win over the Thunderbirds of the Great West Conference. Michael Herrick threw a 15-yard TD pass to Zach Bauman with 3:07 to play for the game-winning touchdown. Bauman rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown. Matt Estrada returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown.
