Lomong Advances to 1,500 finals

BERLIN, Germany - Former Northern Arizona standout Lopez Lomong advanced to the finals of the 1,500 meters as the IAAF World Championships with a second-place finish in his semifinal heat on Monday. Lomong finished in 3:35.75, the fifth-fastest time in the two semifinal heats.

He is one of three Americans who will compete in the 1,500 finals on Wednesday. Bernard Lagat, the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, finished third in the first heat, which was won by Morocco’s Amine Laalao in 3:36.68. American Leonel Manzano finished second in the late heat in 3:36.29, behind Kenya’s Asbel Kiprop (3:36.24).

“It is a great thing for me, a great moment, but also four our country,’’ Lomong said. “I will put it all out there for the final. I think I can run with all these guys, with all of them. I believe that three U.S. medals are possible, we can work as a team. I came here to go round by round. I made it to the final: everything is God’s gift.’’

Lomong, an NCAA champion while at Northern Arizona, qualified for the 2008 Olympics, but failed to make the finals.
