The Sacramento State women and the Weber State men have captured the 2008-09 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophies.

Sacramento State catapulted past Northern Arizona by winning the women’s outdoor track and field championship last weekend in Missoula. The Hornets earned 16 points for the victory, giving the program 86.5 points for the season for an average of 10.8 points per sport. Northern Arizona, which finished second at the outdoor championship, finished with 84.5 points for an average of 10.6 points per sport.
Points are determined based on team finishes in the regular-season standings for soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball and football. Points are awarded based on finish at the Big Sky Championship in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and golf.
Sacramento State has won back-to-back Women’s All-Sports Trophies. The victory in 2007-08 was the first for the school.
Sacramento State’s season was highlighted by championships in tennis and outdoor track and field, and runner-up finishes in golf, cross country and indoor track and field, as well as a surprising tie for fourth place in women’s basketball.
Weber State’s men picked up a record 15th Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy, but the first since tying for the award in 2001-02.
Weber State dominated the men’s race this season, finishing with 81.8 points for an average of 13.6 points per sport. Northern Arizona was second at 10.5 points per sport.
Weber State earned 22.5 points last fall for tying for the regular-season football title with Montana. It was Weber State’s first conference football title since 1968. Weber State earned 24 points by claiming the regular-season basketball championship. The Wildcat men also finished second in cross country and outdoor track and field, tied for third in tennis, and captured fourth place at the indoor track and field championship.
The University of Montana finished third on both sides, with the Grizzly men averaging 9.7 points per sport, and women averaging 8.7.
In July, the Big Sky Conference will announce the winner of the 2008-09 Sterling Savings Bank Presidents’ Cup. The Presidents’ Cup is an annual award that recognizes a combination of academic and athletic achievement of student-athletes. Academic criteria includes individual grade point averages, graduation rates and number of All-Conference performers with grade point averages above 3.0.
Weber State led the Presidents’ Cup race following the winter semester. The Wildcats finished the season with a slim lead over Northern Arizona in overall athletic points. Weber State amassed 148.8 points for an average of 10.63 points per sport, while Northern Arizona averaged 10.56 points per sport. Montana was third at 9.11 points per sport.
Weber State is seeking its second straight and fourth overall Presidents’ Cup title. Northern Arizona won the Presidents’ Cup in 2005-06, while Montana captured the prestigious honor in 2006-07.
