OGDEN, Utah (Nov. 3, 2009) -- The Big Sky Conference has announced its 2009 women’s soccer All-Conference teams and individual award winners. The selections were made in a vote by the league’s eight head coaches Tuesday morning. Voting for your own players was prohibited.
Portland State’s Dolly Enneking was named Offensive MVP. Cris Lewis, also from Portland State, was named Defensive MVP, while Idaho State freshman Ashley Jones was named Newcomer of the Year.
Enneking dominated conference play with four goals and two assists to lead the Vikings to their first Big Sky regular season title since 2004. The Tacoma, Wash. native led the conference in shots and points, she also tied for first with 11 goals. In week 10 of the season, the senior tallied at total of three goals and an assist in victories over Idaho State and Weber State. The wins launched the Vikings to the top of the standings, where they remained for the rest of the season. Enneking was also named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week three times in 2009.
Portland State senior goalkeeper Cris Lewis was named the Defensive MVP. Lewis’ eight shutouts placed her in a tie for first in the conference, also she ranked second in saves and goals-against-average. The senior lead a defense that collected three shutouts and only allowed five goals in conference play. The Burien, Wash. native was named the conference’s defensive player of the week twice, in winning efforts over Oregon State, Wyoming, and North Dakota State.
Ashley Jones, a freshman from Draper, Utah was named the Big Sky Newcomer of the Year. She finished third in the conference with 15 points. Two of her five goals were collected in conference play, with the latest coming in a must win match against Weber State. Jones knocked in a cross from Jana Davis-Boehler at the 30:58 mark to tally her second game-winning goal of the season. Her five assists tied her third in the conference with teammate Annamarie Hofstetter.
The 2009 Golden Boot Award is awarded to the player(s) who lead the conference in points during conference play. Portland State forward Dolly Enneking tallied four goals and two assists for 10 points in seven conference matches. This marks the fourth time a Viking has collected at least a share of the Golden Boot in the last ten seasons, more than any other Big Sky school in that time frame.
Eastern Washington, Portland State, and Northern Arizona all placed three players on the All-Conference first team, Idaho State received two, while Cori Shreve was the lone representative from Sacramento State. The Hornets did place four to the All-Conference second team, while Northern Colorado collected three spots, Montana and Portland State each had two. Northern Arizona and Idaho State rounded out the second team with one apiece.
Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, and Portland State will compete in the Big Sky Championship this weekend in Portland, Ore.
