Ogden, Utah (October 19, 2009) - The Big Sky Conference has announced its women’s soccer players of the week for matches played Oct. 12th through Oct. 18th. Idaho State midfielder Annamarie Hofstetter has been named the Offensive Players of the Week, while Eastern Washington defender Chelsey Hannesson and Portland State defender Toni Carnovale were named Co-Defensive Players of the Week.
Hofstetter lead the Bengals’ offensive explosion in a 4-2 victory over Northern Arizona. Idaho State tallied three goals in the first half, one from Hofstetter. The senior from Boise, Idaho also made her mark on the record books when she collected her 23rd assist of her career in the second half. She had entered the match in a tie with Sacramento State’s Katie McCoy who set the record from 2004-07. In the Bengals’ 2-0 victory over Northern Colorado Hofstetter controlled midfield play allowing the Bengals to post seven on goal shots, aiding the Bengals in their first home sweep of the season.
Hannesson lead the defensive line in holding Sacramento State to just two shots on goal in a 1-0 victory over the Hornets on Sunday. On Thursday the Eagles were able to force a tie with Portland State, Hannesson and the Eagle defense stood firm allowing only one goal. An outstanding effort as, the Vikings tallied 21 shots and nine corner kicks. For the weekend, the Eagles allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of play in games against two of the top four teams in the league standings.
Carnovale aided the back line in shutout over Montana and only allowed Eastern Washington to take three shots on goal, in a 1-1 tie. The Vikings needed a stellar defensive performance against the Eagles, as Eastern Washington entered the match as the league’s top offense with 20 total goals. On the weekend the Vikings only allowed two corner kicks, one to each opponent. The sophomore from Seattle, Wash. scored the game-tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation against the Eagles, as it was the first goal of her career.
